Buckland (real name David Stewart) is an emerging theatre-maker, performer, and composer creating unafraid, honest, and emotive art that intersects the worlds of sound and stage.

Already a respected figure in the Boorloo (Perth) music and theatre scenes, the hype from those on the outside has been growing with every new work he becomes involved in.

A big 2021 saw the multi-directional creative release debut ‘Tangle of Shame / B w/U’ on Rockton Records, write and star in the award-winning theatre show My Shout with Undercurrent Theatre Company which he co-founded, and begin development on a new music and stage work Common Ground recording in natural landscapes around regional WA.

Covering a broad spectrum of sounds, Buckland’s music moves through pop, new wave, and Krautrock spheres, permeated by 80s synths, drum machines, novel textures, and electro colour. His music has been compared to the likes of John Maus, Cate Le Bon, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, and Tangle of Shame was featured in RTRFM 92.1’s Sound Selection upon release.

Growing up in Kalgoorlie and Boorloo (Perth), the 22 year old Buckland has been embedded in Western Australia’s music ecosystem from a young age. He formed the band and fixture of the local scene Man Sandal in 2014, and has also been a recording engineer and producer for many smaller scale projects such as Smol Fish and Talking Trash. Buckland’s theatre credits include SITU-8, Beginning at the end of Capitalism, and REST.

“Buckland is meant to be a project, in at least the live show, that looks at that space in between live theatre performance and live music performance. So I'm now in the process of building that live show and taking inspiration from other performance forms, building the band, and the plan is to have theatre makers and choreography accompany every performance. I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from Rachel Dease, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith.”

“I've been writing songs for a really long time by myself, but I kind of got to a point where they were really different to what we were doing in Man Sandal, and they were just asking to be their own project.”
