“Man Sandal deliver a close to six minute opus that finds horns and violin adding extra textures and tones as the song progresses into its final half. It is the song’s extended refrain that is its greatest asset, and where it does its best to earworm you. Can’t Mean Much is an intriguing taster for what is to come from Man Sandal.”
- Xpress Mag, on Can’t Mean Much
In the quiet seaside town of Bremer Bay in early 2020, Man Sandal recorded their debut album Chess Club.
The result is an LP kaleidoscopic in its range, and vast in its depth. Touching on dance-able indie pop, glistening folk balladry, and heartfelt and direct alt-rock.
Trickles of grand piano, strings, and horns fill the spaces left by sun-drenched guitar riffs and soft, yet raw intertwining vocal melodies.
“We’d take a guitar and a portable mic into the bush and sit around it and work on the song together. The sample in Future Knows Us was from one of these nights – a little snapshot into the Bremer antics.”
“It’s confusing and disorientating and sometimes you have to make some hard decisions for the benefit of yourself.”
